Recently, AERZ Civil Structural Consulting Inc. completed the design and permitting package for a residential addition and renovation project in Vulcan County, Alberta. The project involved the design of a new 330 sq. ft. addition that created a modern recreation and living area featuring a new fireplace while integrating seamlessly with the existing home.
The Homeowner’s Vision
The homeowner wanted additional living space that would improve the functionality of the home while maintaining its existing character. The project included:

Solving Structural Challenges

One of the most significant engineering challenges involved modifying the existing structure to create larger open spaces.
Several existing walls were removed to improve room connectivity and create a more functional floor plan. Removing these walls required detailed analysis to determine how loads from the existing roof system would be transferred safely. New engineered beams and headers were designed to replace the structural support previously provided by the removed walls.
The project also required careful evaluation of the existing hip-roof system and pony wall framing. New framing arrangements were designed to maintain a continuous and reliable load path from the roof to the supporting structural elements below.
Integrating the New Roof System
Connecting a new addition to an existing home is often one of the most technically challenging aspects of residential design.
For this project, a new roof structure was designed to integrate with the existing hip roof while maintaining proper drainage, constructability, and long-term performance. The design included engineered trusses, valley framing, roof tie-ins, and detailing to ensure compatibility between new and existing construction.
The result was a roof system that blends seamlessly with the existing home while maintaining structural integrity and weather protection.
Foundation and Floor System Design
The addition was supported using a screw-pile foundation system combined with engineered floor framing. The floor structure included:
- Pressure-treated perimeter framing.
- Engineered joist layout.
- Triple-ply beams.
- Proper load transfer to screw piles.
- Exterior-rated connectors and fasteners.
This solution minimized site disturbance while providing reliable long-term support for the addition.
HVAC Coordination and Building Services
Adding conditioned living space requires careful consideration of heating and air distribution.
AERZ coordinated HVAC routing requirements within the addition and identified practical duct layouts and mechanical chase locations to facilitate installation and maintain energy efficiency. Particular attention was given to the vertical mechanical chase connecting the basement, main floor, and addition ceiling space.
This coordinated approach helped ensure that architectural, structural, and mechanical requirements worked together effectively.
Energy-Efficient Design
Energy performance was a key project objective.
The design incorporated enhanced thermal assemblies that exceeded minimum code requirements.
Roof Assembly
The roof design included:
- Engineered roof trusses.
- Ventilation baffles.
- R-60 attic insulation.
- Vapour barrier protection.
- Continuous air sealing.
The roof assembly achieved an effective RSI value of approximately 10.79, exceeding the required RSI value of 10.43.
Wall Assembly
The exterior wall assembly utilized:
- 2×6 framing.
- R-24 batt insulation.
- Air and vapour barriers.
- Exterior sheathing and weather protection.
The wall assembly achieved an effective RSI value of approximately 3.15, which exceeded the required code target.
Floor Assembly
The floor system incorporated:
- Insulated floor cavities.
- Continuous rigid insulation.
- Air sealing measures.
- Enhanced thermal resistance.
The floor assembly achieved an effective RSI value of approximately 6.42, exceeding the required RSI value of 5.02.
Visualizing the Design Through Revit
To help communicate the design intent and coordinate the various disciplines involved, the project was developed using 3D Revit modeling.
The 3D model allowed the homeowner and project team to visualize:
- The overall addition geometry.
- Roof integration details.
- Interior space planning.
- Structural framing arrangements.
- Mechanical coordination requirements.
This collaborative approach reduced uncertainty and helped streamline the permit and construction process.
