Complete Structural Engineering for a 14′ × 24′ Detached Garage in Calgary

1. Foundation and Slab Engineering

This project used a 5-inch concrete slab placed over a 6-inch compacted gravel base.
Key engineering considerations included:

  • 32 MPa concrete with air entrainment
  • Reinforcement placed mid-depth with 4‑10M bars at the perimeter
  • 2% slope toward the overhead door for drainage
  • 8-inch concrete curb wall for structural support and durability

2. Wall and Framing Design

The walls were framed using SPF #2 lumber with:

  • 2×4 studs @ 16″ o/c
  • Double top plate
  • Reinforced corners and ladder blocking
  • Pressure-treated sill plates

Header and lintel design was performed for all openings, including:

  • 10′ × 7′ overhead garage door
  • Side entry man door
  • 36″ × 36″ window

3. Roof Structure

The roof uses prefabricated trusses spaced at 24″ o/c supported by continuous top plates and designed for Calgary’s snow load requirements under the Alberta Building Code.

4. Final Deliverables

The homeowners received a complete engineering package:

  • Architectural coordination
  • Structural drawings (S0, S1, S2)
  • Notes and specifications
  • Slab and curb wall details
  • Framing elevations
  • Ready for permitting
