Cranston Home Gets a New Entrance Door in Calgary

🏗️ What Was AERZ Civil Structural Consulting Inc.’s Project in Cranston?

In December and February, AERZ Civil Structural Consulting Inc. provided structural engineering and drafting services for a residential project in Cranston, located in the southern part of Calgary. The scope involved designing a new entrance door on the side of a single-family home to support the creation of a secondary basement suite.

To accommodate the new door, our team had to cut through a tall wood-framed wall, part of the foundation wall, and the outer joists of the house. We engineered the lateral support system for the opening and reinforced the wall structure after evaluating lateral, vertical, and floor load safety requirements.

During initial consultations, we explored multiple design options with the homeowner and reviewed the City of Calgary permitting requirements for each alternative. According to the city’s terminology, this type of work is classified as:
“New entrance door in an existing foundation wall or tall wall.”

We also reviewed the original blueprint and construction documents submitted during the initial permit application for the home to ensure full compliance and structural integrity.
